Axson F40 is an incredibly tough and accurate Polyurethane resin. Great on its own for making two part moulds or as a backing material for an epoxy gel coat. Spec wise it’s similar to the popular BJB 1630 resin used a lot in the States. It can be poured solid to a max of 100mm thick in a single pour or made in to a paste using Polyfibres II for brush up moulds. It takes fillers well and is easy to bulk out making it very economical when pouring block moulds. For bulking out we use our heavy granule filler that allows the resin to still flow while bulking it by up to 100% by volume, making it very economical.
When used as a backing material for Epoxy gel coats you need to create a mechanical bond between the two materials. I use regular fibreglass chop strands embedded in to the epoxy gel coat to give the Axson F40 something to grab on to as the two materials won’t chemically bond. The huge advantage in using F40 over an epoxy casting resin is that an epoxy will generally have a very slow cure when cast thick; in the region of 24-36hrs minimum!
Axson F40 can be demoulded in 4 hours providing you with a much quicker turnaround time while maintaining strength and accuracy. You have about 10 – 15 minutes working time but it kicks slowly so it goes through a nice gradual thickening process (unlike the snap cure you get with fast cast resins) that makes it very easy to use when doing brush up moulds and shells.
This has been the go to resin for Make up FX artists across Europe for a number of years so this product already has a great track record.
Axson F40 is our replacement for the Rencast FC54, production of which has been suspended by the manufacturer. We find it to have very similar properties even down to being the same colour! In trials we’ve found that it actually mixes more quickly and easily than the FC54 as the two components owed often settle requiring vigorous mixing to even them out. F40 seams less prone to having the fillers settle and when they do they mix back in smoother. F40 does differ in that it’s a 100:20 mix as opposed to the 1:1 mix of FC54.
